PETS Nutritional Guidelines

The demand for high-quality and accurate nutritional analyses in the pet food industry is growing. Manufacturers of A-brands, private labels, and store brands are facing increasingly stringent requirements to demonstrate that their products comply with the guidelines of FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation). That is why NutriControl is introducing a new, unique service: PETS Nutritional Guidelines.

Why Choose NutriControl?

  • Reliability: Our reports are based on scientific guidelines and provide an independent assessment of nutritional values.
  • Efficiency: Thanks to automation, we can respond quickly, even with a high volume of requests.

What Does This Mean for You?

For Which Animal Species and Food Categories Do We Offer PETS Nutritional Guidelines?

We provide PETS Nutritional Guidelines, for pet food products intended for dogs and cats. These reports cover both dry and wet food products.

How Do I Know If My Product Complies with FEDIAF Guidelines?

For compliance testing, the analysis results from the Certificate of Analysis (COA) are converted into the units used by FEDIAF: either unit/100 g Dry Matter (DM) or unit/1000 kcal Metabolizable Energy (ME).

The converted results are then compared against the FEDIAF guidelines, which specify minimum recommended nutrient levels depending on the product’s application (animal species and life stage). For some nutrients, FEDIAF also provides maximum recommended levels. These are included in the compliance testing when applicable.

This ensures a comprehensive evaluation of whether your product meets FEDIAF standards.

What Is the Difference Between Reporting Based on Dry Matter (DM) and Metabolizable Energy (ME)?

FEDIAF provides guidelines in different units, and our FEDIAF report includes compliance testing based on both dry matter (DM) and metabolizable energy (ME), allowing you to choose the most relevant report for your needs.

  • Dry Matter (DM): For reporting based on dry matter, the analysis result is corrected for the moisture content present in the product. This provides a standardized way to evaluate nutrient levels irrespective of the product's water content.

  • Metabolizable Energy (ME): ME is a more accurate way to express the energy density of your product but is more complex to determine. The most precise measurement of ME is achieved through digestibility trials. However, FEDIAF specifies predictive formulas for determining ME, as outlined in European Standard EN 16967, making it feasible to calculate ME without extensive testing.

By including both methods, we ensure our reporting is comprehensive and tailored to meet FEDIAF's requirements while providing flexibility for your assessment.

How Long Does It Take to Receive My PETS Nutritional Guidelines?

PETS Nutritional Guidelines, can be generated once the analysis of all required nutrients has been completed. After all necessary analyses have been performed, a maximum of 5 working days is needed to generate the report.

What Happens If My Product Is Found to Be Non-Compliant?

Our reporting includes a compliance assessment for each individual nutrient. If one or more nutrients do not comply with FEDIAF guidelines, this will be clearly indicated in the report.

Since FEDIAF guidelines are recommendations rather than legal requirements, no further actions will be taken by the laboratory. It is up to the manufacturer or brand owner to determine the necessary steps based on the report findings.

Are the Reports Available in Languages Other Than English?

the report is only available in English.

How to Request a Report and What Information Do I Need to Provide?

When submitting your sample(s) via the customer portal, you can select whether a PETS Nutritional Guidelines should be generated for the respective sample.

For an accurate compliance assessment, it is essential to provide the following details:

  1. Type of Product – Indicate whether your product is dry or wet pet food.

  2. Intended Application – Select the appropriate category, aligned with FEDIAF guidelines:

    • Dog – Adult (95 kcal/kg)
    • Dog – Adult (110 kcal/kg)
    • Dog – Early Growth (< 14 weeks) & Reproduction
    • Dog – Late Growth (≥ 14 weeks)
    • Cat – Adult (75 kcal/kg)
    • Cat – Adult (100 kcal/kg)
    • Cat – Growth
    • Cat – Reproduction

These selections ensure that the compliance testing is performed according to the correct FEDIAF reference values.

Can I Request Analyses for Specific Nutritional Components, Such as Vitamins or Minerals?

Yes, the FEDIAF guidelines include recommendations for various nutrients, such as fatty acid composition, vitamins, and minerals.

To calculate metabolizable energy (ME), at a minimum, the following analyses are required:

  • Moisture
  • Protein
  • Fat
  • Crude Ash
  • Crude Fiber

In addition to these core analyses, you can request specific nutritional components. However, compliance testing is only performed for nutrients included in FEDIAF guidelines. Any nutrients not requested will not be assessed for compliance.

What Is the Cost of PETS Nutritional Guidelines?

The cost depends on several factors. For a detailed price quote, please contact us.
